Board-Certified Interventional Radiologist — Huntsville, Alabama

Meet Dr. Austin Bourgeois

Bringing Expert Minimally Invasive Care to North Alabama

Dr. Austin Bourgeois is a board-certified, fellowship-trained interventional radiologist who has dedicated his career to providing patients with advanced, minimally invasive alternatives to traditional surgery. Since joining the North Alabama medical community in 2016, he has established himself as the region’s leading specialist in image-guided therapies — bringing procedures to Huntsville that previously required patients to travel hours to academic medical centers in Birmingham, Nashville, or Chattanooga.

Dr. Bourgeois combines the technical precision of a physician who has published extensively on optimizing treatment outcomes with the genuine compassion of a doctor who takes time to listen, explain, and ensure every patient feels confident in their care. Whether treating an enlarged prostate, uterine fibroids, chronic knee pain, liver tumors, or pelvic congestion syndrome, his approach is the same: deliver the best possible results with the least disruption to your life.

Trained at the Nation’s Leading Programs

Medical School
University of Alabama School of Medicine — where Dr. Bourgeois developed a strong foundation in medical science and patient care.
Residency — Diagnostic Radiology
University of Tennessee Medical Center — comprehensive training in advanced medical imaging and diagnostic techniques across all organ systems.
Fellowship — Vascular & Interventional Radiology
Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) — one of the nation’s premier interventional radiology training programs. Under the mentorship of leading pioneers in embolization therapies and aortic endovascular repair, Dr. Bourgeois mastered the full spectrum of image-guided, minimally invasive procedures. This rigorous fellowship prepared him to offer patients treatments that were once available only at the largest academic centers.
Board Certifications
Dual board-certified by the American Board of Radiology in both Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology & Diagnostic Radiology — the highest standard of credentialing in the specialty.

Procedures & Specialties

Dr. Bourgeois’s clinical practice spans the full range of interventional radiology, with particular expertise in procedures where minimally invasive approaches offer patients dramatic advantages over traditional surgery. His areas of focus include:

Non-surgical treatment for enlarged prostate (BPH) that relieves urinary symptoms without the sexual side effects of traditional prostate surgery.

Fibroid treatment that preserves the uterus and fertility with same-day discharge and a fraction of the recovery time of hysterectomy.

Breakthrough treatment for chronic knee osteoarthritis pain that reduces inflammation at its source without surgery, steroids, or joint replacement.

Precision internal radiation therapy for liver tumors including hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastases, cholangiocarcinoma, and neuroendocrine tumors. An area of Dr. Bourgeois’s published research.

Targeted delivery of chemotherapy directly to liver tumors combined with blood supply occlusion for maximum tumor kill with minimal systemic side effects.

Curative-intent heat-based destruction of liver tumors through a needle-sized probe, guided by real-time imaging.

Image-guided freezing of small kidney tumors that achieves cancer outcomes equivalent to surgery while preserving maximum kidney function.

Treatment for chronic pelvic pain caused by varicose veins inside the pelvis — a condition that often goes misdiagnosed for years.

Non-surgical repair of enlarged scrotal veins to relieve pain and improve male fertility with 1-2 day recovery.

Published Researcher. Recognized Expert.

Dr. Bourgeois is not only a skilled clinician but a dedicated researcher who has contributed meaningfully to advancing the science of interventional radiology. His academic credentials include

  • Author of dozens of peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and book chapters on interventional radiology techniques
  • Nine or more publications specifically focused on Y90 radioembolization, covering dosimetry optimization, PET/CT-based imaging verification, GI tract radiation sensitivity, and procedural technique refinement
  • Member of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) editorial board — the flagship journal of interventional radiology
  • Boston Scientific TheraSphere Advanced User — indicating proctor-level expertise with the Y90 radioembolization platform
  • Invited lecturer at conferences both in the United States and internationally
  • Active clinical trial investigator in medical device research and interventional oncology
  • Member of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR)

What this means for patients: your care is guided by a physician who doesn’t just perform these procedures — he has published the science on how to optimize their outcomes. The techniques Dr. Bourgeois uses reflect the latest evidence and his own research into making these treatments as effective and safe as possible.

Eliminating the 100-Mile Drive for Expert Care

Before Dr. Bourgeois began offering these procedures locally, patients in North Alabama faced a difficult reality. Prostate artery embolization, Y90 radioembolization, pelvic congestion embolization, geniculate artery embolization, and kidney cryoablation were simply not available in the Huntsville area. Patients had to drive two or more hours each way to Birmingham, Nashville, or Chattanooga — often multiple times for consultations, procedures, and follow-ups.

For someone already dealing with chronic pain, cancer fatigue, or debilitating urinary symptoms, that travel burden is significant. For active-duty military personnel and aerospace professionals at Redstone Arsenal who need rapid return to duty, it was often impractical.

Dr. Bourgeois established his interventional radiology practice in Huntsville to change that equation. Today, patients across North Alabama, southern Tennessee, and the greater Tennessee Valley have access to the same advanced minimally invasive procedures offered at the nation’s top academic medical centers — without leaving their community.

Serving: Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, Athens, Florence, Scottsboro, Albertville, Fort Payne, and southern Tennessee including Fayetteville, Tullahoma, and Winchester.

Your Health. Your Decision. Our Expertise.

Dr. Bourgeois believes that informed patients make better decisions and experience better outcomes. Every consultation begins with listening — understanding your symptoms, your concerns, and what matters most to you. From there, he provides a clear, honest assessment of your options, including whether a minimally invasive procedure is the right fit or whether a different approach would serve you better.

This commitment to transparency extends to every aspect of care. Dr. Bourgeois explains procedures in plain language, sets realistic expectations for recovery and results, and ensures you have the information you need to make a confident decision. He coordinates closely with your referring physicians — urologists, gynecologists, oncologists, orthopedic surgeons, and primary care providers — to ensure seamless, team-based care.

Self-referrals are welcome for all procedures. You do not need a referral from another physician to schedule a consultation.

Beyond Medicine

Outside the hospital, Dr. Bourgeois is a devoted husband and father. He and his wife Emily are raising three children in the Huntsville community. When he’s not caring for patients, you can find him on the golf course, training for long-distance runs, or spending time outdoors hunting and fishing across North Alabama.

He also embraces the lessons of perseverance that can only be taught by being a lifelong Auburn football fan.
